Sarah Anthony

State of Michigan Senator- 21st District

Sarah Anthony is the Democratic State Senator representing Michigan’s 21st District, which covers Eaton County and parts of Ingham County, including sections of Lansing. Born December 2, 1983, in Lansing, she graduated from Everett High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and legal studies from Central Michigan University and a master’s in public administration from Western Michigan University.

Anthony began her career as a legislative aide to State Representative Joan Bauer, then spent nearly a decade as deputy director of the Michigan College Access Network. She served on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners starting in 2013, becoming the youngest Black woman to serve on a county commission in the United States.

Elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2018 and to the State Senate in 2022, Anthony made history as mid-Michigan’s first African American woman elected to both chambers of the Legislature. In 2023, she became the first Black woman to chair the Senate Appropriations Committee, overseeing the state budget. Her legislative record includes Michigan’s CROWN Act banning hair discrimination, a ban on child marriage, and an expanded Working Families Tax Credit (Senate Democrats; Michigan Chronicle)
