David C. Miller, MD, MPH, is the chief executive officer of Michigan Medicine and the executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan Health. He is a professor in the Department of Urology and maintains a clinical practice focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with prostate and kidney cancers. Dr. Miller’s academic background includes a medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, a urology residency at the University of Michigan Health System, and a fellowship in urologic oncology at UCLA.
In his leadership roles, Dr. Miller oversees a clinical enterprise with nearly 20,000 employees, serving more than 1.3 million patients a year. He has played a significant part in expanding healthcare access and improving patient outcomes across Michigan, leading strategic partnerships and advancing quality, safety, and patient experience. His research interests include comparative effectiveness research, physician-led collaborative quality improvement, and the relationship between healthcare organizations and the quality/cost of specialty care, with a strong emphasis on urological cancer care.
Dr. Miller is recognized for his visible leadership style, commitment to medical education, and efforts to advance interdisciplinary clinical care and research at Michigan Medicine. He has also led major responses during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and contributed to Michigan Medicine’s reputation as one of the nation’s top hospitals in numerous specialties.
